Summary

PURPOSE: Presbyopic contact lens (CL) wearers require seamless vision across near, intermediate, and distance tasks, while also maintaining comfort during prolonged wear and digital device use. This analysis presents results from a 3-week, prospective, single-arm, bilateral, multicenter, open-label study of the kalifilcon A daily disposable multifocal CL among habitual delefilcon A multifocal wearers who were refitted with kalifilcon A multifocal CLs.

METHODS: Habitual wearers of multifocal soft CLs with near-add requirements of +0.75 to +2.50 D were fitted with kalifilcon A multifocal CLs to be worn on a daily disposable basis for 3 weeks, with scheduled in-office follow-up visits at 1 and 3 weeks. The primary outcome measure was the proportion of subjects who agreed that the CLs provide clear vision at near, far, and in-between. Supportive outcomes included patient-reported ratings of visual performance, comfort, digital device performance, and overall satisfaction. This subgroup analysis included participants whose habitual lenses before study entry were delefilcon A multifocal CLs.

RESULTS: Among 42 habitual delefilcon A multifocal wearers, 90.5% rated their overall opinion of the kalifilcon A multifocal CLs as good, very good, or excellent. Agreement that the lenses provided clear vision at near, far, and in-between (primary endpoint) was reported by 69.0% of participants overall. Most participants also agreed that the lenses allowed them to effortlessly move from various tasks throughout the day (88.1%) and provided clear vision during prolonged digital device use (81.0%). More than half of participants (57.1%) preferred the study lenses much more or somewhat more than their usual lenses, while 23.8% had no preference. Comfort-related ratings were also favorable, with 88.1% agreeing that the lenses were comfortable during prolonged digital device use, 88.1% agreeing that they felt continuously moist, and 92.9% agreeing that they felt soft, smooth, and weightless. Most participants (81.0%) reported they definitely or probably would buy the lenses in the future if recommended by their eye care professionals.

CONCLUSION: In this cohort of prior delefilcon A multifocal wearers, kalifilcon A daily disposable multifocal CLs demonstrated favorable patient-reported performance, comfort, and overall satisfaction following 3 weeks of wear. These findings suggest that presbyopic patients previously wearing a premium daily disposable multifocal lens can be successfully refitted with kalifilcon A multifocal CLs while maintaining favorable subjective visual and comfort outcomes.
