Summary
BACKGROUND: Daily disposable soft contact lenses are an important alternative to frequent replacement lenses for patients who may benefit from improved comfort and convenience. This case series aimed to understand real-world experiences of patients transitioning from frequent replacement to daily disposable lenses, here with nesofilcon A as an introductory lens to this new modality. Cases were collected as part of a wider study with central institutional board exemption.
CASE SUMMARY: We present patients from six separate sites who transitioned from frequent replacement lenses to nesofilcon A daily disposable lenses (B+L Biotrue ONEday). This case series included six female and four male patients (20 eyes) who were 19–62 years of age when presenting for refitting; nine were White and one did not report race. With habitual correction, distance best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) OU was 20/20 for seven (70.0%) patients and 20/25 for one (10.0%) patient with the frequent replacement lenses, 20/30 for one (10.0%) patient with spectacles, and not reported for one patient. Reasons for fitting with nesofilcon A daily disposable lenses included requiring improved comfort, convenience, visual stability, and ocular health; discouraging lens overwear; decreasing allergy signs and symptoms; and patient request to switch to dailies or to have the option for seasonal/vacation use. Five patients (nine eyes) were fit with spherical lenses and six patients (eleven eyes) were fit with toric lenses. A successful fit was achieved for all cases, with good lens centration and movement. At initial fit, distance BCVA OU was 20/15−1 for one (10.0%) patient, 20/20 for seven (70.0%) patients, 20/20−2 for one (10.0%) patient, and not reported for one (10.0%) patient. For most patients, prescription remained the same over the course of documented follow-up (1 week–10.5 years). At most recent follow-up, distance BCVA OU was 20/20 for nine (90.0%) patients and 20/20−1 for one (10.0%) patient.
CONCLUSION: Transitioning from frequent replacement lens wear to nesofilcon A daily disposables was associated with good visual acuity outcomes and acceptable lens fit. Overall, these findings support nesofilcon A lenses as a suitable option for patients wearing frequent replacement lenses and open to moving to a daily disposable.
